Learning to Use the Muzzle

Getting your pet used to the racing muzzle can be tricky. He may become so focused on this new strange thing on his face that he forgets to run down the track.

You can help prepare him for wearing this necessary piece of equipment. Take the muzzle and gently rub it by the side of his body and then his face. Do this for a few minutes daily. When your dog appears to be used to this experience try putting it on him. Make sure that it fits him properly. It should be not too tight that it restricts his breathing nor too loose that it easily falls off of him.

At this point, your dog may still try to pull the muzzle off, but distracts him by showing him the lure (cloth tied to a string). He will then forget about the muzzle and will take off after the lure. Give yourself plenty of room for this activity, preferably in a backyard or other fenced area.

In a short time, your dog will relate the muzzle to the racing activity and will accept wearing it. Even with practice before a fun day, your dog will need help during an actual race. Don't worry, he will catch on soon. Racing is a naturally enjoyable activity for Jack Russell terriers, and wearing a muzzle makes it a safe recreational pursuit.
